Cervélo TestTeam Ranked #1 Pro Cycling Squad

Cervélo TestTeam is currently the number one ranked pro cycling team following an impressive spring season and a strong showing at the Giro d’Italia.
Sponsored by 2XU Compression for off the bike recovery and training, the Team gained 120 points as a result of their Giro performance for a total of 608 points, placing them 37 points in front of second place Caisse d’Epargne and 50 points up on Quick Step, who dominated the rankings throughout the April Classics.

“We didn’t set any goals for race performance, but are certainly excited about the success the riders have achieved in the first five months of the team’s existence,” said Gerard Vroomen, co-owner of Cervélo TestTeam.

“I’m equally happy with the activities around the other two pillars of the TestTeam project; aiding the bike industry in product development and creating fan access opportunities.

TestTeam Partners like 2XU, Rotor, Zipp, Vittoria, 3T, Castelli and ZipVit, as well as Cervélo, have all made good use of the team’s resources in the development of new products.

Our fan access events are also off to a good start, with three travel events to date and autograph sessions at a lot of races. In the Giro, our riders were available for autographs before most stages, and even after some. In the past, the argument was always that such activities hurt the race performance. We were willing to accept that drawback but that doesn’t seem to be an issue.

The final piece of the puzzle is the documentary “Beyond the Peloton” on www.bartape.net, which gives fans who cannot visit us at races access to the team “virtually”.

“The feedback we’ve received from our original TestTeam partners indicates that the value the team has generated to date far exceeds their expectations,” explained Vroomen. “And though, as we’ve stated in the past, Cervélo enjoys the enormous brand exposure we get from our name on the uniform, we’re a brand that doesn’t need the 4-5 billion TV impressions generated at the Tour de France.

With the world #1 status, the defending Tour de France champion Carlos Sastre, sprinter Thor Hushovd and a rising star like Henrich Haussler, the team offers excellent potential to build a strong brand association in the largest annual sporting event in the world.”

Dan MacPherson Claims Age Group for Ironman China in 2XU

Daniel MacPherson has proven he’s as proficient on the ironman circuit as he is before the camera. The popular Aussie actor and TV presenter took out the M25-29 age group category of the Ironman China (Haikou, Hainan Island), which took place on April 19 this year.

MacPherson proudly sported 2XU for the swim and bike legs of the race, which he claims to be “by far the toughest of my life”. With temperatures in excess of 45 degrees, there’s no disputing why!

Crossing the finish line in a time of 11:01:13, MacPherson now qualifies for Kona, Hawaii later this year and these pics make it plain to see how much the race meant to him.

While 2XU Cycle and Swim are big MacPherson favourites, its our 2XU Compression Socks he can’t get enough of.

“I love the socks, swear by them,” he said. “Leading into China, I did all my long running in them and recovered better with much less soreness.”

Apparently he’s even been spotted wearing them under his suit when filming City Homicide!

Keep up the great work Dan…onwards and upwards for Kona.

2XU’s Melbourne Victory takes A-League Premiership

Photo: Sebastian Costanzo

2XU Compression’s Melbourne Victory became the first A-League team to win the championship twice when it took down Adelaide United 1-0 on Saturday night. Victory’s goal came from the foot of Tommy Pondeljak in the second half, quickly sending Telstra Dome’s 53,0000 fans into a frenzy.

Those who anticipated the final being a pushover were quickly mistaken.

After losing 4-0 a fortnight ago in the second leg of the major semi-final, Adelaide was determined not to make the same mistakes. On Saturday night, the Reds played with everything it lacked two weeks earlier; matching Victory in almost every element of the game.

Armed with 2XU Compression, another piece of Victory’s finely tuned Grand Final performance equation was in place. Throughout the entire 08/09 season, 2XU’s elite compression garments have been worn by Victory footballers for training and recovery sessions to deliver a comprehensive array of physiological benefits; from improved circulation and heightened agility through to reduced muscle fatigue and damage.

With an obsessive focus on delivering superior fabrics and tangible benefits to the wearer, 2XU has built a highly technical range of sports apparel that reflects relentless research and development. Ongoing testing and consultation with World Champion athletes and sporting bodies such as the Victorian Institute of Sport has been a critical ingredient in the winning formula.

With stronger fabrics and a superior, well researched design, 2XU sets the benchmark in high performance compression & its alliance with premiership teams such as Melbourne Victory is a testament to this fact.

Team 2XU’s Andrew Stalder claims A Grade Win at Sandown Twilight Racing

Team 2XU rider Andrew Stalder claimed first place in the A Grade division of last night’s Sandown Twilight Racing, held at Sandown Racecourse. With heavy south easterly winds, it was a night for only the toughest riders, with little respite throughout the night.

A six rider break dominated the A Grade break. It was initiated by an A Grade newcomer in David Ross, followed by Team 2XU’s Pat Lane. A couple of laps into their attack, five more riders escaped the bunch.

Policed by Team 2XU’s Andrew Stalder, Brightstar duo Stefan Kirsch and Kane Walker, Paul Mason and Robert Croft chased across, although Croft lost contact just before the groups joined.

Ross tried an attack on the final pass over the hill, but was immediately covered, and the six reached the final corner together. Lane led out for 2XU’s Stalder, who held off a strong challenge from Walker to take the win.

Last night’s impressive result marks Stadler’s second consecutive win at Sandown.

Curtayne brothers dominate at NZ’s Whangamata Tri in 2XU’s V:1

Perfect conditions greeted competitors in NZ’s Contact Tri Series race at Whangamata on Sunday, with flat surf, warm temperatures and a light breeze.
The men’s race boasted a top quality field to match and while it was the familiar figure of Brent Foster who led them out of the swim, twin brothers Andrew and William Curtayne were hot on his tale in 2XU’s highly acclaimed V:1 wetsuits.

William Curtayne stayed in touch with 7 times Ironman NZ Champion Cameron Brown in the bike leg, sitting third behind series champion Gisborne Sheldrake.

Brown and Curtayne headed out shoulder to shoulder on the run with Sheldrake ten metres behind. One lap into the three lap run and it was still Brown with Curtayne stalking the 36 year old every step of the way with Sheldrake having slowly dropped off the pace in third.

On the final lap it was the younger and quicker legs of Curtayne that won the day as he broke away to win by 8 seconds.

22 year old William Curtayne was delighted with his race.

“I was so pleased with my bike today, the plan was to stay with whoever went past me on the bike and stay in contact through to the run. To stay in touch with two class guys like Cam and Stephen on the bike was great. I struggled a couple of times on the flat but thankfully there were some hills that allowed me to close up each time,” said Curtayne.

William’s twin Andrew, placed third overall – an undoubtedly impressive result for the family.

The Curtayne brothers will compete in 2XU V:1 wetsuits throughout the Contact Tri Series this summer and aim to qualify for the NZ U23 team to the World Championships later in the year.

Last year, 2XU’s signature V:1 wetsuit was given an unbeatable 10/10 rating by one of Europe’s top triathlon magazines. With the open water season well and truly upon us, now is the time to head instore and get fitted up! Check out www.2xu.com/swim for further info.

Great Coverage for 2XU’s Holly Aitken

Our brilliant young 2XU triathlete ambassador, Holly Aitken secured some fantastic coverage in the Sunday Age yesterday. Great to see Holly’s hard work is spiking serious media interest.

See below for the precise article by Michael Sharkie (The Sunday Age, Nov 30, 2008):

All the best for your training Holly!

SUMMER means triathlon for one of Australia’s most talented young athletes, Holly Aitken, and after braving an unusual Canadian summer earlier this year, she is looking forward to more familiar weather.

Competing in the ITU Junior World Championships in Vancouver, the 17-year-old finished 36th but found the 10-degree temperatures a little testing.

“It was very difficult competing in those conditions. It was only 12 degrees in the water, so (it wasn’t) exactly inviting.”

Determined to find form this summer, Aitken has been training hard to gain a place in the Australian team for the Youth Olympics in early January, starting with the qualifying Super Sprint Series at Runaway Bay in Queensland on December 12.

“We’ve got four races in three days, so it’s pretty challenging, but if you make the top six after all the races you go to the Youth Olympics,” she said.

A member of the Victorian Institute of Sport triathlon program, Aitken has been competing since she was 11. Her father, former Carlton footballer Ian Aitken, is her regular training partner when not at the Victorian Institute of Sport. She says their training got her started in triathlon. “Dad and I used to train together just to keep fit, for enjoyment. Someone suggested I give triathlon a go about five years ago and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

Aitken has a busy summer and autumn ahead of her, with the Super Sprint Series followed by a national training camp. The Youth Olympics are next in January, and then there’s a potential trip to the US as a part of her school’s track team.

“We compete against all the best schools over there in all the best races. It’s an awesome trip to be a part of.”
